Looking for practical advice

A relative of mine completed a short outpatient program but struggled once he returned to his usual surroundings. Now he's discussing residential treatment and wants to know whether a longer stay would actually be necessary. I'm curious how inpatient and outpatient care differ, when residential care is considered appropriate, and what usually determines the duration of a 28 to 90 day program.

What surprised me when someone close to me went through this was how much the home environment affected his progress after a short program. He wanted to keep working and stay at home, so outpatient care was worth discussing, but his counselor also looked closely at relapse risk, support at home, and how much structure he needed. Residential treatment can provide more separation from triggers, while outpatient programs allow someone to continue daily responsibilities. I found St. Joseph's outpatient rehab programs and schedule useful for comparing the two approaches. A 28 to 90 day stay should be based on individual progress and clinical needs, not just a preset number.
