Need a federal cyber crime lawyer

I run a small company that sells remote support software to IT contractors. One of our resellers apparently bundled it with something federal prosecutors say was used to steal logins and access computers. I wrote part of the original code, but I had no idea what that reseller was doing with it. Last week I received a federal target letter mentioning conspiracy and unauthorized access, and our regular business lawyer admitted this is outside his area. Does anyone have contact details for a federal cyber crime lawyer?

A regular business lawyer won’t be much help once federal prosecutors are involved. You need someone who deals with federal criminal cases and understands how software can be used by people other than its developer. Call the criminal defense section of your state bar and ask for attorneys who have handled federal computer crime cases. Speak with a few of them before choosing anyone, because this isn’t the kind of case you hand to the first local defense attorney who answers the phone.

That target letter isn’t something you should answer on your own, especially when prosecutors are already trying to connect you with the reseller’s actions. Anything you say about the code could sound very different when it’s taken out of its technical context. Contact the firm before the response deadline and let the lawyer communicate with the government. You need to find out exactly what prosecutors believe you knew before giving them any explanation.
